Background:
The band emerges as the inaugural studio project of a musical collective. The initiative stems from Quartetto Areasud, a seasoned ensemble rooted in Sicilian folk and world music since 2010.
Musical journey:
Comprising esteemed musicians from renowned world music groups like Nakaira and Oi Dipnoi, Quartetto Areasud brings together diverse talents with extensive international touring experience. Their fusion with folk singer Maurizio Cuzzocrea, a fixture in Italy’s folk festival circuit, enriches their artistic tapestry.
In 2021, under the record label Il Tamburo di Aci, they unveiled “Musica lievemente tradizionale,” a studio
album crafted during the lockdown. The release showcased their prowess in intricate arrangements and
exploration of new sonic realms, drawing acclaim and paving the way for an international tour across Europe and beyond.
Innovative contributions:
The group’s creative endeavors are further enhanced by the contributions of young composer Mattia
Cavallaro, who infuses traditional themes with modern sensibilities through innovative arrangements. The result is a contemporary fusion of traditional folk elements and electronic music textures, elevating
experimentation and radical improvisation to new heights.
Collaborative spirit:
Collaboration is at the heart of Quartetto Areasud, with an array of guest artists enriching their sonic
landscape. Notable collaborators include the string quartet comprising Valerio D’Ercole, Eszter Filóné Nagy, Erzsébet Palojtay, and Mátyás Ölveti, alongside Moroccan singer Said Tichiti, whose poetic lyrics grace the lead track “Yatir.”
